Over 90% of lupus patients will experience fatigue to some degree. Some patients simply need a short nap to re-boost their energy levels while others find it debilitating. When addressing this symptom in patients it can be important to determine if there is a specific underlying cause as fatigue in lupus can be linked to an associated medical problem.

These can include anemia, fibromyalgia (around 30% of lupus patients also have this condition), depression, side effects from medications, or a kidney or thyroid complication. Correctly establishing why a patient is fatigued will guide physicians and patients on how best to treat it, it may be as simple as switching medications or altering diet and exercise.
